Choosing the Right ERP for Your Business in Pakistan

A practical guide to evaluating ERP options — from off-the-shelf platforms to custom-built systems. What to consider when your business processes do not fit standard templates.

An ERP touches finance, inventory, sales, purchasing and often HR. Choosing the wrong one is expensive to undo, so the decision deserves more than a feature comparison. The most reliable way to get it right is to begin with your own processes rather than a vendor list.

Start with how your business actually works

Write down the flows that make money or cost money: quote to cash, procure to pay, stock movements, approvals. Note where people currently use spreadsheets, paper or WhatsApp to fill gaps. These gaps, and the exceptions your team handles every day, are what an ERP must support.

If most of your processes are standard, a configurable off-the-shelf platform will usually get you live faster. If your competitive edge depends on how you operate, forcing that into a generic template can quietly remove the advantage.

The three realistic routes

  • Off-the-shelf or configurable platform — fastest to start, predictable licence model, but you adapt to its way of working.
  • Open-source platform with customisation — more flexibility and lower licence cost, but needs a capable implementation partner and disciplined upgrades.
  • Fully custom system — fits your workflows exactly and can integrate with anything, but needs a longer build and a partner you trust to maintain it.

Questions to ask every vendor

  • Who owns the data and how easily can we export it?
  • How are local requirements — tax and regulatory reporting, local currency, Urdu/English documents — handled, and by whom?
  • What does a typical upgrade look like once we have customisations?
  • Who supports us after go-live, and how quickly do they respond?
  • Can we speak to a business of similar size that has been live for more than a year?

Look beyond the licence

Total cost includes implementation, data migration, training, integrations, customisation and ongoing support. Ask for these to be priced separately so you can compare like for like, and plan for a phased rollout instead of a single big-bang go-live.

How we can help

We help businesses assess whether a configurable platform or a custom system fits best, then design, build and support it. A short discovery session is usually enough to tell which route makes sense for you.
