Most software projects that struggle do so because of unclear goals and scope, not poor coding. This framework gives business owners a structure for planning a project before development begins.
1. Define the outcome
State the business result in one or two sentences — for example, “reduce the time to raise and approve a purchase order” — and how you will know it has been achieved.
2. Map users and processes
- Who will use the system, and what do they need to do?
- What does the process look like today, including the exceptions?
- Which existing systems must it connect to?
3. Prioritise scope
Separate what is required for the first release from what can wait. A smaller first release reaches users sooner, produces feedback and reduces risk.
4. Decide how you will work together
Agree who makes decisions, how often you review progress, and how changes are handled. Regular demos of working software beat long status reports.
5. Plan for launch and support
- Data migration and user training.
- Testing with real users before go-live.
- A support arrangement after launch, with clear response expectations.
